New Edited Volume Explores Global Perspectives in Musicology
19 December 2025
Dr Amanda Hsieh from our Department of Music has teamed up with Dr Vera Wolkowicz from the University of Glasgow to bring together 10 authors from around the world to ask a timely question: why do we need musicological perspectives beyond our own?
Their new book, Global Musicology: Music Histories from ‘Elsewhere’, offers a brave attempt at doing musicology as musicologists in a globally connected world. With scholars from across the globe, it explores what we might gain by learning about the connected histories of musicologies from both outside the West and in relation to the West. The ‘elsewhere’ of the subtitle playfully unsettles long-held assumptions about centres and peripheries, inviting readers to use perspectives from beyond the Anglo-American mainstream as a lens through which to reflect on their own musicological foundations.
