USTEP - Type U
USTEP offers Type U (undergraduate students) and Type G (graduate students) programs. The Type U program is designed for undergraduate students to take various courses across UTokyo's Faculties and College. Students participating in the Type U program will be affiliated with the Center for Global Education of UTokyo. This means that Type U students will follow the academic procedures and schedule at the Center for Global Education, regardless of their majors. Their status will be “Special Auditors” who are eligible to register for university courses for credit. It is designed for classroom study where participants can take regular English and/or Japanese courses across Faculties and College.

Students should be aware that courses change annually and courses on the website above may not be offered in the next academic year.
Type U students are required to register for minimum of ten (10) hours worth of classes per week during their stay. Japanese immigration law stipulates that individuals with a student visa must spend a minimum of ten hours in class per week; at least one of the classes must be a non-language class.
There are a variety of courses available in English. UTokyo requires students to be proficient in English and/or Japanese. Non-native English speakers will be required to provide evidence of English language ability.
If students wish to take courses in Japanese, they are required to have a minimum JLPT level 1.
Students can register for Japanese Language Education classes to help with Japanese Language.

The University International Support Center (ISC) and the Center for Counseling and Disability Services (CCDS) provide comprehensive support to international students, international researchers, and faculty members of Tohoku University.

The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) are currently offering short term placements for PhD or MPhil students:
