About Us

The Centre for the History of Medicine and Disease (CHMD) is a long-running community hub for the historical study of disease, medicine, and environment at Durham. The Centre reports to the Faculty of Arts and Humanities and is an affiliated centre of the Wolfson Research Institute for Health and Wellbeing, and collaborates widely with other research centres and institutes across the university.

The CHMD promotes:

  • The development of interdisciplinary, cross-national research projects
  • Collaborative research with other relevant centres in the UK and abroad
  • Postgraduate education and research in the History of Medicine and History of Science
  • Public understanding of the historical dimensions of health care and medical science
