Biography
Arthur is a current first-year PhD student in the Solid Mechanics and Structures Node within the Department of Engineering. His research is focused on investigating the behaviour of re-entrant corners in excavations and their corresponding support requirements through the use of numerical modelling, and is supervised by Professor Charles Augarde, Professor William Coombs, and Dr. Mao Ouyang.
He holds an MEng in Civil Engineering from Durham University, having graduated in 2025, and his dissertation focused on geotechnical modelling, utilising the 2D geotechnical finite element (FE) analysis software Gofer (Oasys) to optimise building foundation layouts over existing tunnels. Between the completion of his MEng degree and the beginning of his PhD, Arthur also undertook a summer internship as part of the N8CIR scheme, where he developed a neural network to predict land subsidence across specific locations in Europe.
