Staff profile

Ian is inspired by the power of ecologically informed human-scale food systems. He recognizes the need to spatially intensify food production as the land-sparing vs land-sharing debate highlights, however, sees the productivity of human-scale food systems from domestic forest gardens to market gardens as a clear solution. In his PhD, he hopes to quantify the power of human scale food systems as they currently are in the UK and project what they could acheive if we unleashed their full potential on our agricultural land and gardens.

Over the course of his research career, Ian hopes to rigorously explore various ecological human-scale growing techniques to empower this scale of food production to the best of his ability. This begins with an innovation of his own, an exploration of growing from a soil-based vertical plane, which he refers to as Soil-Centric Vertical Gardening.
