Cosin’s Library
Cosin's Library will be re-opening soon.
Welcome to Cosin’s Library, one of the earliest public libraries in the North-East of England. The library can be found at the heart of Durham's World Heritage Site. It was founded in 1669 by Bishop John Cosin. He also added many books to the library. A great number of these were from his personal collection.
Later bishops of Durham also donated books to the library. In 1832, Bishop Van Mildert allowed the newly established Durham University to use the library for ceremonies and exams.
Why not visit the library to discover why it is so special and to learn more about the bishop, the building, and his books.
You can also find out about the library on the dedicated Cosin’s Library website. We also have a virtual tour of the library if you are unable to visit in person.
The books in the library can be requested for use in the Barker Research Library. To find out how to request materials, please read the guidance on using our collections.
Please note: To protect the historic space and collections, we ask that visitors do not wear high-heeled shoes and do not bring in flowers. We also ask that visitors leave food and beverages at the reception area or that these are stowed away in a bag. Large bags need to be left at reception or in a locker. Thank you for helping us to look after our wonderful library.
Access
Cosin’s Library is a historic building. Entry to the library is via a staircase with 11 stairs and a banister on one side. There are four additional steps to get in and out of the library itself. For anyone unable to access the library in person, we have a virtual tour of the library.
A portable hearing loop is available from our reception.
Please get in touch with us if you have any questions about access to avoid disappointment on the day.
