Museum of Archaeology Galleries

The Museum of Archaeology has two permanent galleries for you to explore.

On the ground floor our Prehistory and the Romans gallery features objects spanning 250,000 years of history.

Upstairs, our newly reopened gallery continues the story of Durham, featuring stories from the Anglo Saxon, Norman, Medieval and post-Medieval periods.  This exhibition features interactive games and hands-on activities for all, alongside a community wall showcasing local archaeology and art.  The community wall has been shaped by consultation and engagement with local groups and visitors, reflecting a wide range of perspectives on Durham’s past and present.

We run a regular programme of events and activities, inviting visitors to dig deeper into the archaeology of Durham beyond our walls!

Alongside the physical displays, our online exhibitions and digital gallery trail offer additional ways to explore the collection.
