Welcome to Developmental Science

We are a vibrant research group in the Department of Psychology, who do pioneering research on basic mechanisms and applied impacts within the broad area of Developmental Science. Our areas of expertise span from prenatal development and infancy, to the development of cognition and sensory function in childhood and adolescence, through to cross-cultural and comparative developmental science, as well as neurodiversity and mental health.
Our Research

About Us

Our research is driven by understanding key questions about how we develop, change and thrive. We conduct our research in child and family-friendly facilities in the Department, including state-of-the-art laboratories such as the Durham Babylab and the Motion Capture VR lab. Many of us also conduct our research in local schools, nurseries and science museums, while our cross-cultural researchers work with communities in rural and urban regions across the globe.  We use a variety of methods and techniques in our work, including qualitative research methods, eye-tracking, fNIRS, Magnetic Resonance Imaging and 4D ultrasound scanning of fetuses.

Our research is funded by a range of funders, including the British Academy, the Economic and Social Research Council, European Research Council, Leverhulme Trust, the John Templeton Foundation, the National Institute for Health and Care Research, Research England and the Wellcome Trust.

The Developmental Science group hosts the Junior Scientist summer engagement programme – a fun opportunity to engage young minds in psychological science and give back to our local community. Researchers in the Developmental Science group also lead the Centre for Neurodiversity and Development

Our Research

Study with us

Our students are a vital part of our community. We attract a large cohort of students who are interested in studying development psychology, neurodiversity as well as developmental aspects of cognitive neuroscience. We have a vibrant group of PGR students working within Developmental Science and several training and development schemes for supporting the next generation of developmental researchers. We are always keen to speak with prospective students.

Take part in our research

We are always looking for volunteer families to take part in our studies – this can be a fun trip taking as little as 30 minutes of your time. Our studies are presented as fun games for children.

You can easily volunteer you and your child(ren) to participate in some of our research. By filling out the form linked below, we will register you on our database and contact you when a suitable study is running. You are under no obligation to take part. If you can, we then arrange a short, fun visit with you - for example after school, on a weekend, or during school holidays.
